This preserved Gothic-Renaissance castle was built in the 13th century by the Lords of Pernštejn and it is situated in the middle of forests on the eastern edge of Českomoravská vrchovina (Bohemian-Moravian Uplands). It had been reconstructed many times and the original simple image of this castle is getting lost in a series of picturesque Gothic and Renaissance reconstructions. This amazing late-Gothic fortess is unique of its kind in Europe. The castleś many interesting features include inscriptions made with red chalk on the walls of its circular passage. Dating from the first half of the 16th century, they are indicative of the ideas entertained by the people then. The castle´s main treasure is a library which - unlike the rest of its spaces - has preserved its original furnishings. It contains a massive collection of valuable books, compiled by the castle´s last owners, the Mitrovský family, in the 19th century.
