The original Romanesque building probably dates from the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th century (the latest research shows that it could be the first half of the 11th century as well). It was later rebuilt in the style of Gothic and Baroque. The upper part which was connected with the town fortification had a defensive function while the lower part was used as a chapel. Fragments of the mural paintings representing the motif of St George´s legend date from the Gothic period. These frescoes were restored in 1995 – 1996. A permanent exposition of the Museum of Záhorie introducing this oldest well-preserved building in Skalica was open here in 2002.
