ternberk Castle was originally a medieval fortress with a cylindrical tower. The fortified remains of the main palace attract visitors with thier unusual atmosphere. The lovely scenery surrounding the castle is now a forest park. The castle was established in the mid-13th century by Zdeslav of Chlumec and Sternberg, a member of an old, Czech, noble family.
Sternberg castle offers visitors a unique set of early Italian and Northern Renaissance paintings and examples of Dutch and Flemish baroque paintings. The originals of some of the exhibited works are admired in galleries all over the world such as the St. Petersburg Hermitage or the Louvre.

A rare collection of Renaissance and Gothic wood sculptures, such as the relief of the "Martyrdom of St. Kunhuta", one of the oldest Renaissance woodcarvings in Moravia, is worth noting. Gold-painted, leather wall coverings, tile stoves and furniture from the Gothic to Empire styles offer a unique chance to view interior design from past centuries. Insight into the modern life of the early 20th century aristocracy can be seen in hot air heating systems, bathrooms and a dining elevator. Another unexpected sight from this time period is an Art Nouveau elevator.
