This Renaissance chateau was raised on the site of a medieval stronghold by Emperor Rudolph II. of Habsburg (1552–1612). Later owners of this grandiose estate were all from significant Bohemian noble houses.

The chateau acquired its current appearance according to the architectural design by Josip Plečnik in 1921–1924 when it was converted into a summer residency of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the first President of Czechoslovakia. He became so fond of Lány that he wished to be buried there together with other family members. The chateau has remained a presidential residency until today. The adjacent Lány preserve and the large chateau park spread out around the chateau.
